Are you ready to join a global community dedicated to shaping the future? The Schwarzman Scholars program is now accepting applications, offering a unique opportunity for aspiring leaders worldwide. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the essential details of this prestigious scholarship.
Host and Location
The Schwarzman Scholars program is a global initiative focused on fostering leadership and a global community. While interviews are conducted in locations such as London and New York, the program itself requires candidates admitted to apply for a student visa to China, indicating the primary location of study. The program for the Class of 2026-2027 is set to begin in August 2026.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Schwarzman Scholars Class of 2026-2027, candidates must meet several key criteria:
- Age: You must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years of age as of August 1, 2026.
- Undergraduate Degree: You must have earned or be on track to complete an undergraduate degree by August 1, 2026.
- English Proficiency: You must demonstrate English proficiency. This requirement is waived if you are a native English speaker or have studied for at least two years in English at an undergraduate or graduate level. Otherwise, you will need to provide official scores from one of the accepted tests:
- TOEFL: Minimum 100
- IELTS: Minimum 7
- Cambridge C1 Advanced: Minimum 185
- Cambridge C2 Proficiency: Minimum 185
- DET: Minimum 130
- Note that English proficiency exams are only valid for two years.
- Chinese Citizenship: Applicants holding Chinese citizenship (Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan) are eligible but apply through a separate Schwarzman Scholars China application with a different selection cycle.
Programs & Benefits
While the sources emphasize joining a “global community that will shape the future” and focus on leadership accomplishments and aspirations, they do not explicitly detail the specific academic programs or financial benefits (e.g., tuition, living expenses) covered by the scholarship. The application process is designed to assess your leadership abilities and potential.
Application Procedure
The entire application process is online and must be completed in English. Materials are not accepted via email or mail.
1. Start Your Application:
◦ Create an account using your email, which will be used for all correspondence. If you created an account in 2021 or later, log in as a returning user; otherwise, create a new account.
◦ You do not have to complete your application in one sitting; you can save your work and return as needed.
2. Personal Information:
◦ Provide your legal name, nationality, gender, place of birth, and date of birth exactly as they appear on your passport.
◦ A valid passport is strongly advised before submitting your application, as it’s required for admitted candidates.
3. Required Documents & Sections:
◦ Biographical Profile: A summary of up to 100 words of your leadership accomplishments and future aspirations, written in the third person and ending with your country of citizenship. This will be used throughout the selection process and on the Schwarzman Scholars website if admitted.
◦ Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV): Upload your most recent resume/CV, limited to two pages maximum. Include leadership, professional experiences, education, and other highlights not covered elsewhere.
◦ Video Introduction: Highly recommended but not required. Provide a link to a one-minute video introduction. If you cannot submit one due to technical issues, a brief explanation is required. Google Drive shared videos are no longer accepted.
◦ Interests: Select up to two interests aligning with your professional and leadership aspirations.
◦ Education: List only undergraduate and graduate degrees completed or on track to complete. Do not list non-degree programs (e.g., study abroad, certificates) here; include them on your Resume/CV.
▪ Transcripts: Upload transcripts for each undergraduate and graduate degree you attended. They must include your full name, institution, degree conferred, and conferral date. If study abroad credits are not on your main transcript, upload the study abroad transcript separately.
▪ Translations: For transcripts not in English, accurate and complete English translations are required along with the original transcript. Translations can be issued by the institution or by professional, certified services.
▪ GPA: Enter your cumulative GPA or numerical score exactly as on your transcript. If your school doesn’t use a numerical system, input zero and describe your achievement (e.g., “First Class Honours”) in the “Degree Designation” field.
▪ Ensure transcript files are not password-protected; inaccessible files will deem your application incomplete.
◦ English Language Test Scores: If required, identify your test type, date, and scores, and upload your examinee score report.
◦ Leadership Roles: Showcase up to five leadership roles illustrating your experience. For each, explain its significance, your contribution, outcome, or initiative.
◦ Awards & Recognitions: List up to five awards, scholarships, recognitions, or publications relevant to your leadership trajectory. Explain their significance and your contribution.
◦ Work Experience: List up to two full-time work experiences. Students with no full-time employment are not required to complete this section. Do not list part-time work, internships, or volunteer experiences here; include them on your Resume/CV.
◦ Essays and Short Answer Responses:
▪ Leadership Essay (750 words)
▪ Statement of Purpose (500 words)
▪ Two Short Answer responses (100 words each)
▪ Essays can be uploaded as PDF or Word documents. Word counts are strict, and footnotes, headers, and titles count towards the total.
◦ Recommenders: Register three recommenders by providing their names, titles, and contact details. Recommenders should know you well and speak to your intellectual abilities, personal characteristics, and leadership with specific examples. Family members or relatives cannot be recommenders. Recommenders will receive a system-generated email with a unique submission link; letters uploaded by applicants or sent via email/mail will not be accepted. You can send reminders and, in extenuating circumstances, exclude and replace a recommender. You can submit your application before all recommendation letters are received.
◦ Disciplinary Action: Answer questions regarding any academic or criminal disciplinary action and provide explanations.
◦ Interviews: Indicate your anticipated location during the interview period to help determine your interview date and location.
▪ Interview Dates for 2025: October 28, October 29 (London); November 5, November 6 (New York).
◦ Clarification Comment: Use this section to clarify any information or explain impacts due to the global pandemic (e.g., leave of absence, unusual circumstances).
◦ Military Service: Indicate your current or past military status.
4. Final Submission:
◦ You must confirm and certify that all information is complete and accurate, essays are your own work, and factual representations are true by providing your electronic signature.
◦ The system will display any missing required fields or errors that must be corrected before submission.
